If you live on the 8th, 12th or 16th floor, you know this situation for sure. The lights are turned off, and after a few minutes a thin trickle starts flowing from the tap, and then nothing. Because the pumps that lift water to the upper floors are powered by electricity. No current — no pressure — no water. It is for such cases that a storage tank is installed in the apartment.
In a multi-story building, water does not flow by gravity - it is lifted by pumping stations located in the basement or technical floor. These pumps consume electricity. As soon as the power goes out, the pumps stop, the pressure in the system drops, and water stops flowing to the upper floors.
Residents of the first two or three floors hardly feel it, they have enough residual pressure from the main. But everything above the fifth floor is completely without water at the moment of the shutdown.
The solution is simple and reliable: a storage tank with a volume of 200–500 liters is installed in the apartment, connected to the general water supply system. As long as there is water and pressure, the tank remains full. When the pressure drops or the water is turned off, the automation switches the system to power from the tank. You don't even notice it: the tap continues to work.
200 liters is about two full showers, several cooking cycles, washing, and a reserve for the toilet. For a family of two or three people, this is enough for a day of comfortable living, even during a long power outage.
A complete water storage system consists of several elements.
The tank itself is a polyethylene or stainless steel tank that is installed in a technical closet, in the bathroom, or on the balcony.
Pressure booster pump - supplies water from the tank to the taps with normal pressure, not gravity.
Automation and valves monitor the water level in the tank, switch between the city network and the reservoir, and protect against overflow.
Coarse filter - installed at the inlet to prevent debris from the network from entering the tank.
The entire system takes up little space: a standard 200-liter tank in a horizontal position fits into a technical cabinet or a niche in the bathroom.
This is the question that worries the most. A 200-liter tank is not a small bottle, but it is not something that will take up half of the apartment either. The most common installation locations: a technical closet or a pantry are ideal if there is at least a small space.
Bathroom or toilet - the tank is placed under the ceiling or behind a false panel. A balcony with insulation - suitable for apartments where there are no technical rooms.
During the renovation phase, the location of the tank is included in the project immediately, so it is organically hidden behind the decoration and does not take up usable space.

Lviv is a city with active development and 16-24-story buildings in the newest residential complexes. However, power outages remain a reality, and for residents of the upper floors, each such outage means an automatic water shutoff.
Customers who have already installed tanks say one thing: "I don't understand why I didn't do it right away.".
This is especially important for families with children, the elderly, and anyone who works from home and cannot afford a day without normal living conditions.
It is most convenient and cheapest to install a tank during renovations - when the walls are open, the pipes are still being laid and there is an opportunity to immediately hide everything behind the finish. Installation in a finished apartment is also possible, but more complicated. If you are currently at the stage of renovations in Lviv - this is the right moment to lay the system once and for all.

Yes, if a filter is installed at the inlet and the tank is made of food-grade polyethylene or stainless steel. If desired, a fine filter or UV disinfection can be additionally installed.
In most apartments, it takes one working day if the system is installed in parallel with the renovation. In a finished apartment, it takes 1–2 days, depending on the complexity of the wiring.
Minimum: once a year, flush the tank and check the filters. The automation and pump do not require constant maintenance.
