Renovation with a small child: what to consider so as not to regret it later?

When you do renovations without children, you think about beauty, materials, and budget. When you have a small child or are expecting one, the list of priorities changes significantly. Sharp corners, slippery floors, unprotected sockets, stairs without railings - all this ceases to be trifles and becomes real risks. The good news: if you think about it at the renovation stage, and not after, most problems can be solved simply, cheaply, once and for all. We tell you what to anticipate.

Corners are the first thing people forget and the first thing that matters

A child who is learning to walk falls. A lot. And often falls precisely where there are sharp corners. Standard furniture, window sills, countertops, protruding elements of drywall structures — all of this can be made safe immediately with proper renovation planning.

During the renovation phase, it is worth avoiding protruding right angles in plasterboard niches, boxes and partitions - instead, make rounded corners. This is not difficult and not more expensive, but it requires a conscious decision at the design stage. It will be much more expensive to redo later.

For furniture and countertops, if they are already purchased with right angles, there are silicone pads. But honestly, they don't last forever, they peel off and don't look the best. If you have the opportunity to choose furniture with rounded edges or order countertops with milled rounding, it's better to do it right away.

The floor is not slippery and soft.

There are two main requirements for flooring in general, and especially in a children's space: it should not be slippery and it should be relatively soft in areas where the child crawls and plays.

Glossy tiles in the living room or hallway are beautiful, but dangerous. A child (and even an adult in socks) will slip on them. If you choose tiles, choose matte ones with a texture and a slip coefficient of R10 or higher. This is a standard characteristic that can be checked in the tile passport.

For the children's room and play area - quartz vinyl flooring (LVT) or high-quality laminate with underlayment, they are much softer than tiles and not as cold. It is comfortable for a child to sit and crawl on them without a carpet.

Thresholds between rooms are a separate topic. Classic thresholds are a small hazard that even adults often stumble over. When renovating, it is better to make the floor on the same level throughout the apartment or use a concealed installation profile - both beautiful and safe.

Sockets and electricity: basic safety

Standard sockets at a height of 30 cm from the floor are a classic that everyone knows. But there are a few nuances that should be considered during the renovation phase.

First, sockets with protective shutters are not a child's toy, but real protection. The shutters automatically close the contacts when the plug is not inserted. They cost the same as regular ones - you just need to specify when buying.

Secondly, it is better not to place sockets at a height of up to 60–70 cm from the floor in children's areas at all - or to install them with a lock. A child aged 1–3 years reaches this level and is very interested in "holes in the wall.".

Third, all cables in the nursery should be hidden in cable channels or laid in a gutter - no wires to pull or chew on.

Stairs in the house are the most serious risk area

If you have a private house or a two-level apartment, stairs are a separate big topic. A small child and unprotected stairs are a very dangerous combination.

What is important to foresee during the repair stage: handrails should be on both sides and at a comfortable height - adult and child level. Balusters (vertical fence posts) should be spaced no more than 10 cm apart - otherwise a child can stick their head between them. This is not an exaggeration, this is real injury statistics.

The stair covering is anti-slip: rubber inserts, carpet pads or matte tiles with grooves on each step.

And most importantly, safety gates. These are barriers that are installed at the beginning and end of the stairs. They are sold in any children's store, but for them it is necessary to provide a place for fastening in the wall or fence at the construction stage - a metal mounting element to which the gate can be securely screwed.

Materials: What's on the walls and ceiling?

A child under two years old puts everything in his mouth and climbs where he shouldn't. Therefore, finishing materials in the nursery and adjacent areas should be non-toxic.

Paint - only water-based with the marking "VOC-free" or "low VOC" (volatile organic compounds). Wallpaper - preferably non-woven on a water-based adhesive basis, rather than vinyl with a chemical smell. Varnishes and floor impregnations - with an environmental safety certificate. This is not marketing - this is a real difference for the child's body, especially while the repair is still ongoing.

A good rule of thumb: if there is a noticeable chemical smell in the room after renovation for more than two weeks, something went wrong with the choice of materials.

Recuperation is perhaps the most important decision for a family with children

Heat recovery is mostly talked about in the context of saving heat. But for families with small children, it is primarily about air quality.

Young children breathe more frequently than adults and are more sensitive to the concentration of CO₂, dust and allergens in a closed space. In a typical apartment with plastic windows and no supply ventilation, the air becomes stuffy within a few hours - especially in the nursery during sleep. This is when the concentration of CO₂ increases, the child sleeps restlessly, does not get enough sleep and is more likely to get sick.

The recuperator solves this problem completely: it constantly supplies fresh filtered air from the street and removes the exhaust air, while retaining heat. The nursery is ventilated around the clock without drafts and without heat loss in winter. Filters trap dust, pollen and some allergens. This is not a luxury - it is a basic condition for a healthy microclimate for a child.

The most convenient and cheapest way to install a heat recovery unit is during renovations, when you can make a hole in the wall and hide the wires. Installing it afterwards is more difficult and expensive.

A few more practical things

Furniture to the walls. All tall furniture: cabinets, shelves, chests of drawers — must be attached to the wall. A child will definitely climb in and pull, and an unsecured object will fall. This is a simple rule that saves lives.

Glass. Glass partitions, doors and shower cubicles in areas where children are present should only be made of tempered or triplex glass. Ordinary glass breaks into sharp fragments when hit.

Handles and locks. Door handles at child's hand level and without protection are an invitation to all cabinets and rooms at once. Magnetic locks on cabinets with household chemicals and medicines are mandatory.

Underfloor heating in the nursery. Not just comfort, but real benefits: the child plays and crawls on a warm floor, instead of freezing on cold tiles or laminate in winter.

Safe renovation for a family with children is not a separate expensive project. It is a few right decisions made in advance: rounded corners, non-slip floors, protected sockets, reliable stair railings, non-toxic materials and recovery. Most of this adds nothing or almost nothing to the renovation budget if you think about it at the start, and not fix it later.

FAQ:

Not necessarily all, but in areas accessible to a child up to a height of 70 cm - definitely yes. It's cheap and can be installed in a minute.

Starting from 6–8 months, when the child begins to crawl. But if you are planning repairs now, lay everything down right away, regardless of the child's age.

Yes, there are wall-mounted decentralized recuperators that can be installed in a small hole in the wall in a few hours. They do not require complete renovation and cost from 5,000 UAH per unit. But it is better to do this immediately during the renovation.
