Solar panels for a private house in Lviv: how much do they cost, how much will you save, and how does it work?

Five years ago, solar panels on the roof of a private house in Ukraine were something exotic. Today, they are one of the most popular solutions in construction and major repairs. And it's not just about the ecology and popularity of these systems. It's about simple mathematics: tariffs are growing, the sun shines for free, and the technology has become significantly cheaper in recent years. Let's take a look at everything honestly: what it is, how much it costs, and whether it really pays off.

Why is now the best time?

Several factors coincided at once. The prices of solar panels have fallen more than threefold over the past decade — the equipment has become affordable for an ordinary family. Electricity tariffs in Ukraine continue to grow. And most importantly, power outages have become a reality that everyone has experienced. A system with solar panels and a battery is not just savings, but real independence from the grid during the day.

Lviv region has an average of 1,800–2,000 hours of sunshine per year. This is less than in southern Ukraine, but it is quite enough for the solar system to operate effectively throughout all four seasons.

What are solar panels?

Not all panels are the same. There are three main types that are actually used on private homes.

  • Monocrystalline — the most common and most effective today. Efficiency 20–23%, look like uniformly black or dark blue rectangles. Work well even in diffused light and on a cloudy day. This is the standard for most installations in private homes.
  • Polycrystalline — slightly cheaper, efficiency 15–18%, have a characteristic blue iridescent appearance. A few years ago they were the main choice, now they are gradually being replaced by monocrystalline — the price difference between them is already small, and the quality of monocrystalline is significantly better.
  • Two-sided (bifacial) — a relatively new format. Generate electricity from both sides, using reflected light. More efficient by 10–15% compared to conventional monocrystalline, but also more expensive. Optimal for roofs with good reflection or for installation on canopies and awnings.

What does the system consist of?

The panels themselves are only part of the installation. The complete system includes several components.

Inverter — converts direct current from the panels into alternating current for use in the house. Grid inverters connect to the general electrical grid and allow you to "feed" excess electricity back. Hybrid inverters additionally support operation with batteries.

Batteries — an optional but very popular option now. They store excess energy generated during the day for use at night or during power outages. The most common are lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4): they are safe, have a long charging cycle, and do not explode.

Fastening system — aluminum profiles and brackets that are mounted on the roof. Important: the system must be designed taking into account the snow load and wind for a specific region.

Meter and network connection — if you want to sell excess electricity at a "green tariff" or simply be connected to the grid as a reserve, a separate connection procedure through the regional energy company is required.

How much can you save - real numbers

An average 150 m² private house in Lviv consumes approximately 400–600 kWh per month in the off-season. A 5 kW system (10–12 standard panels) in Lviv region produces an average of 500–600 kWh per month in the summer months and about 150–200 kWh in December-January.

If the electricity tariff is 4.32 UAH/kWh (the current tariff for households over 250 kWh), then 500 kWh per month is a savings of 2,000–2,500 UAH. Over the year, this amounts to 18,000–25,000 UAH in savings on electricity alone. And this does not take into account the sale of excess energy back to the grid.

The cost of a 5 kW turnkey system in Lviv is currently approximately UAH 150,000–250,000, depending on the equipment and the availability of batteries. Payback period is from 5 to 8 years. After that, net savings over 25 years, because this is exactly the warranty period that manufacturers give for modern panels.

Where and how are the panels mounted?

The most popular place is a pitched roof. The optimal slope for the Lviv region is 30–35 degrees, oriented to the south or southwest. But even a deviation from the ideal angle of 15–20 degrees reduces efficiency by only 5–10% — not critical.

If the roof is flat, the panels are installed on adjustable structures at the desired angle. Also popular is installation on canopies over a terrace or parking lot - a double benefit: both the roof and generation.

Installation takes an average of 1–3 days, depending on the size of the system. After installation, connection to the grid via the regional power utility takes 2–4 weeks for paperwork.

What to look for when choosing a contractor?

Solar panels are equipment that will be on your house for 25 years. Therefore, choosing a contractor is more important than with regular repairs. Ask what equipment is offered and whether there is an official manufacturer's warranty. Specify who signs the certificate of work performed and is responsible for the installation. Check whether the contractor has experience connecting to the regional energy supply network - this is a separate competence that not everyone has.

At Dimprobud, solar panel installation is performed in conjunction with other work on the site - roofing, electrical installation, and general construction. It's convenient: one contractor, one responsibility, an agreed schedule.

Solar panels are most appropriate for a private house or cottage with its own roof. If you are building or major repairs with a roof replacement, this is the ideal moment to install the system: fewer additional costs, everything is done in one approach. If the house is already ready, it is also not a problem, installation on the existing roof takes 1–2 days.

If you want to know which system is right for your home and how much you will save, contact Dimprobud. We will come out, evaluate the roof, and prepare a specific calculation for your property.

FAQ:

Yes, but with lower efficiency. Monocrystalline panels generate electricity even in diffused light. In winter, the output is lower due to the short day, but with sunny weather and reflection from snow, the efficiency can even increase.

Theoretically, on a balcony or loggia, but the efficiency will be minimal due to the small area and limited orientation. Solar panels are a solution primarily for private homes.

No. An autonomous system with batteries operates completely independently of the grid. However, connecting to the grid makes it possible to use it as a reserve and sell excess electricity.

For installation — no. To connect to the regional energy network and operate under the "green tariff", a connection procedure is required.
